Very Zen like. there are many small hotels along the beach, mostly grass hut kind of places. Very cool and inviting. Just take a plane to Cancun then the bus to tulum and start walking around and ask for cheap spots. But I think that the cheapest air ticket is by travelling to Cancún, from there I recommendo you Holbox Island, it's an incredible beach.
