Why did Americans travel to Africa to obtain slaves?

Europeans had already taken control of much of North America. Wouldn’t it have been more economically advantageous to enslave the American Indians or even attempt to enslave Mexicans?

Before you flame, I am NOT advocating either course of action. I was asked why and I have no idea.
